Elgin context
Elgin's economy grew up around the Fox River and the Elgin National Watch Company, which operated the world's largest watchmaking manufacturing complex for nearly 100 years, from 1864 until 1969, and it shows in the housing stock: modest cottages, ornate Victorian-era mansions, and brick flats built side by side in the Elgin Historic District and the Spring/Douglas Historic District, most of it dating from the 1880s through the 1920s. That older construction predates modern vapor-barrier and crawl-space sealing standards, and it sits close enough to the Fox River and to Kane County's clay-heavy glacial till that ambient moisture and foundation movement remain recurring considerations across the metro.
